Tibetan is very trendy in this country.
There’s plenty of information on the web. For theravada and scripture, I like http://www.accesstoinsight.org.
I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.
thx!
never figured you for even being interested in spirituality!
I’ve actually been to that site. I’m looking for something that I can take away from the computer, without printing out 2 trees worth of information.
Technically, I’m still not much of a spiritualist. I prefer Theravada Buddhism because I view it more as a philosophy/psychology, rather than a religion. There are no deity’s, no rituals required(although many cultures have added their own), no religious heirarchy’s, no true blind faith. It’s based more on logic.
The buddha even basically said in MN 63 that all he teaches is the four noble truths…that’s why I have issues with mahayana forms of buddhism. They’ve integrated too much with culture. Now the west is integrating pseudo-christianity with buddhism meets new age. I guess evolution is unstoppable, which is also something buddha said(about how his teachings would eventually be unrecognizable from the original.).
You will find plenty of tibetan books however. I own the Pema Chodron collection and I’ve heard that’s recommended as a good tibetan book, but I haven’t gotten around to reading much. The only good theravada book I can think of off-hand is Buddhadhamma, by Phra Prayudh Payutto. But it gets really technical and logically breaks down dependent origination. I found the best source of information were the study guides on access to insight. Also, anything written by Thanissaro Bhikku.
That’s exactly why I’m looking at the Tibetan books on Buddha’s teachings; I don’t have to give up my religious faith to take on the beliefs.
