crayons on super-heated aerogel

Neat. Why wasn’t the shuttle upgraded with this? After all, DS2 (aka, “Stardust”) was launched like 2 years BEFORE Columbia went down.

If it’s so light, you could literally make a multi-layer matrix that overlaps, preventing heat from getting anywhere near the object in question.

Bah.

it wasnt a question of heat mike, somthing broke off, and caused a tear in the wing, and that tear grew as the wing was used for re entry. after that what good is heat proof sheilding gonna do?

Clarification - put it inside the wings and the like, as a buffer..

There’s also still some doubt as to the cause, btw. CAIB has only said that evidence strongly suggests, and that’s what they’re going with as it’s the most likely.

Either way, this stuff could have been used, and may have changed the outcome.
