“As others have so nimbly put it, Windows® consists of 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company, that can’t stand 1 bit of competition.”

wait until someone ports CE to the XBox.. now THAT’s a project.

for the geeks…

You know what’s funny? I’ve been playing around with Windows CE .NET 4.2 - on an emulator on my workstation. It comes with a compiler to build the OS - kernel and all - onto the platform you define - down to the hardware.. You can write your own “boot” drivers to supply the data that winCE needs to boot on your platform.. So if you can code in assembly, if you have to, on your hardware, then you’ve got it made.

Linux - for the hardware geeks. Go forth, ye geeks - and start designing your own hardware around processors (other than intel’s - or including theirs, if you’re obsessed with the Itanium), and you can build the perfect platform - no matter how big the box.

Nice, Bill, nice.

how the hell…!!?

time theory

April 25th, 2003 2 Comments

have you ever wondered about the link between time measurement and old-school non-decimal spherical mapping? That is, longitude, latitude, minutes, hours, etc?

is time a curve that can be “measured” like a curved “plane” (sphere)?

another thing to think about - orbital objects can be tracked by (and are, in some “schools” of thought) longitude, latitude, angle of “descent”, and distance from sea level. not bad - a center-point, extrapolated out to the surface of the earth (at least, its mean), then from that base, you can plot a location in space (at this given time), using only 5 given bits of information - breaking someone’s law.. that is, needing 6 points to plot a 3 dimensional location, relationally.

einstein said relativity applied to everything - everything.. a basis for quantum theory is that by measuring something, you’re affecting the outcome.. measuring anything affects it, relatively speaking.

my brain hurts, but I’ll go on.. I think einstein was trying to say you can’t get away from relativity; I don’t think he was trying to apply it to anything, just giving examples… think about that for a second - if relativity was more a definition of reality as a whole, doesn’t it make more sense?

by measuring the “atomic halves” that result from a split atom, you’re creating the readings, by relating them to YOUR current state.. then when you change it, you expect it to “relate” to the other particle, and you measure it, so it does.

who lost me, and who had an interesting thought after reading that?

The Life Raft
As typified by the life raft floating in a turbulent sea, this personality type strongly needs to help others and to be thought of as a generous and kind individual. Often precisely because these people are so reliable and so willing to help others without recompense, they are taken advantage of and regarded as simply part of the scenery. This problem is compounded by the tendency for Life Raft personalities to view self-promotion as suspect or without merit. These personalities will work unfailingly for a goal and often as not see other, more outgoing personalities take the credit for it.

Generally overworked in an office environment, Life Rafts are nevertheless highly regarded by a wise employer, who sees in them many years of unswerving devotion to the job. Very accurate and precise thinkers, Life Rafts work best when handling the work themselves; they do not appreciate a managerial role and tend to be uncomfortable in that position.

You are a very emotional and sensitive individual. Your life and love of life is dominated by your emotions - you have great feeling towards your fellow man and you are always full of enthusiasm but be careful, you tend to let your heart rule your head and this being so, you could be easily hurt - as perhaps you may have indeed been hurt in the past.

You are trying to improve your position and prestige - be it in your life or in your workplace. Things are, at this time, OK - but they could be better. You feel that it is essential that you break down any opposition that could possibly lurk in the shadows. You know that you are quite capable of achieving this set goal because you have to and because it is essential to your self esteem.

Compromise is the name of the game at this time and it is the only way you can avoid being deprived of the love and affection you so rightly deserve -so soften up a little, be flexible.

You are exhausted, over stressed and you refuse to give in. You are trying to minimize the tension by being physically active. It would seem that you are experiencing problems with an existing relationship and try as you might, you find it impossible to alter the situation because there is no co-operation. There is an urgent need for proper understanding which may only be accomplished by communication. At this time you feel that there is no ‘give and take’ on either side. This is resulting in constant depression. You are irritable and it could be said by your nearest and dearest that ‘you are hard to live with’. You feel the urgent need to get away from it all - even it’s only for a little while. You may be finding it difficult now to make firm decisions - you are restless and generally uptight.

Circumstances are such that you have been exposed to considerable stress and tension, perhaps due to unfulfilled emotional needs. You would like nothing better than to escape from it all by retiring to some ‘fantasy land’ where you are permitted to RELAX and get back your strength.

neglect

Kat and I are going to possibly need roommates for NEGLECt.

possibly.

we’re planning on going, but we may already have a place to stay…

any ideas? maybe a big suite with 6 ppl? I don’t want crashers, tho - I’d rather have everyone on a bed. heh. not like it sounds, but you know what I mean.. I hope.

the following is a geek moment. enjoy.

With a 56K modem, it would take 4 years, 357 days, 23 hours, 24 minutes and 49 seconds to download 1 TB (Terabyte).

Change that to 800 TBs, and it becomes 3486 years, 192 days, 21 hours, 39 minutes, and 37 seconds.

And to think, we’re well on our way to DASD (data storage) of the EB (Exabyte) magnitude.

(1 EB = 1,000,000 TBs)

1 EB would take 4,980,755 years, 38 minutes, and 5 seconds.

If you were to start a download @ 56k at midnight, new years day 2004 (CST for those who need that kinda detail), it would be completed at 12:38:05 am, January 1st, the year 4,982,759 AD.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t plan on being awake.

All this is assuming you have a perfect connection, and that you aren’t using your bandwidth for anything else.

It would still take 1,089,500+ years on Cable/T1.

And a measly 27 years on an OC192 (10 gigabit)…

in-friggen-sane.

And in happier news - a Terabyte will only take 14 minutes 39 seconds on an OC 192.

neat. I want one. I want a wireless one.
